Spiritual gifts asseSsmentS

The church is not a club to pay dues to; it’s a body to belong to and to give to. What does it look like for us to move from club to community -- from a buffet table where we each grab our own wants to a family-style community table where we all bring our best to share?

Your gifts were not designed to be used in seclusion, but to be used to serve and bless the community. Without fail, any place in Scripture where you see the “gifts” listed, they are always mentioned within the context of biblical community—to edify those who congregate at the table. For instance, 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of God” (hcsb).

When we consider the types of gifts God gives, we can look at three primary places—Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Corinthians 12—to find more specifics.

If you have been around the church for any time, you have heard about (or even taken) a spiritual gifts test. Basically you answer a series of questions about yourself. Those answers are inserted into a formula that then draws a score or ranking for the spiritual gifts listed in Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and/or 1 Corinthians 12. The results usually announce your top three spiritual gifts.

This type of test is a great tool and I recommend using one. A lot of these tests present exceptional descriptions and distinctive natures of each gift. But as the creators will attest, the tests are only a tool and not a definite conclusion. The best tool for discerning your spiritual gifts is not a test, but the body of Christ. There you will find out what you bring to the table. Ask others to speak into your life and be willing to listen to their insight. Ask them to observe where they see God using you most significantly.

In Chapter 4 "Bring Your Best to the Table" within the book -- it is mentioned and noted that we would give links to some helpful tools. As a simple resource to you -- we have listed a SPIRITUAL GIFTS ASSESSMENTS below from our friends at LifeWay
